If you are a traveling nurse, there are various tax deductions that you should be aware of. While there are basic deductions that all nurses receive, the expenses incurred for traveling nurses are also oftentimes deductible. It is imperative to note that in order to be eligible for traveling nurse deductions, you must have a tax home. This is the place your reside when not on duty. It will be your permanent mailing address. The tax home will be proof that you are traveling from your home to and from nursing appointments. If you do not have a home and travel between jobs, you must be considered homeless for tax purposes. Be sure that you meet any other federal or state mandated requirements to apply for traveling nurse deductions.

Traveling nurses are often considered to be on temporary assignment. To be eligible for deductions, this must be the case. Temporary assignment is less than one consecutive year at a certain jobsite. Many experts recommend leaving a job site for at least two weeks per year to be eligible for deductions.

As with any nurse, you will receive deduction benefits. For your services, you can deduct any mandated dues such as union fees. In addition, any required continuing education is completely deductible. Your uniform, to include scrubs and small stethoscopes are also eligible for deduction. Most nursing staff are required to keep up to date dues and licenses. The costs you incur while renewing these documents are also deductible.

If you have been determined to be a traveling nurse for tax purposes, there are several more deductions you can take advantage of.
